McClard Wine Cellar"I guess you could say I fell in love with wine," said Jack McClard. As his interest in wine collecting rose, he soon ran out of storage space. Then, the McClards had a brainstorm. Why not build a real wine cellar?
We converted their entire single car garage into a 2,000 bottle, above-ground wine cellar. Custom made, heart redwood wine racks cover nearly every inch of the walls. There are single-bottle bins, diamond-shaped bins, case racks, and single bottle racks in a cascading slope. Half-round and quarter-round tables sit at the end of the racks, while a wine tasting table is located in the middle of the floor. -
McClard Wine CellarThe floor is covered in African slate ceramic tile. Recessed lighting, operated by a dimmer switch, and rope lighting hung along several racks give the room a warm glow.
The temperature is maintained at about 55 degrees and the humidity at 60 to 70 percent thanks to an air handler and refrigeration unit and special insulation techniques to give the room a refrigerator like atmosphere.
"I'm thrilled with the way it looks," Jack McClard said. "It is big but it gives us room to grow."
